Fiona Kingdon – Artist in Wood
About My Work
Working in native and rescued timbers, I create intricate landscapes, silhouettes, keepsakes and jewellery. All are suggested by the woods that I find, the landscapes I love and stories of the people I meet. Pieces emerge over many hours of cutting by hand with a scrollsaw or hand chisels. Skill and attention to the material is required, nothing is perfect, nor is it able to be reproduced endlessly at the push of button.
I am compelled to work with wood and I am at my most content when at my saw. I explore what imagery the timber offers up in the grain pattern, the contrasts within the wood itself, or simply weave the beauty of the wood into my designs. It’s a joy to work a material that’s so giving and I am determined to do justice to the trees that gave it.
I am always on the look out for collaborations and commissions that fit with my spirit and welcome partnerships with galleries that appreciate unique pieces. I welcome the chance travel and deliver U.K wide to facilitate good fit associations.

About Me
I don’t have a story of hardships overcome, or a quirky ‘brand Fiona’ to sell you, neither do I have country cottage or sea view to help ‘sell’ my work. My work comes from the sanctuary in my head and the skill in my hands, not from the view I can afford.
I studied Industrial Design, Furniture Restoration and Craftsmanship in the 90s, but gave up my studies to get over some ill health and then bring up my lovely son. Then I turned working with young people with additional needs and behavioural difficulties. All along, I continued working wood. Making chairs, guitars and cajon drums – keeping my hand in until finally decided that I needed to get back to making full time. After a lifetime working with wood, I found my own way with the scrollworking discipline now love to create and share my work with the wider world.
